Google’s current generative AI performance report documentation explains that the chart is aggregated by property unless a URL filter is applied. If two pages from the same site appear in one applicable feature, the property chart counts one impression while page grouping can count both pages.

This difference is not a minor interface detail. It changes the denominator behind any derived metric. A report that divides clicks, conversions, or page counts by the wrong impression total can look mathematically precise while combining unlike units.

What the report includes

As documented on September 15, 2026, the Search report includes impression data from AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google describes a separate report for generative AI in Discover and excludes Search Labs experiments from this Search report. The list may change, so a recurring dashboard should save the scope and retrieval date beside each export.

An impression represents a link to the site being shown to a user in a supported generative AI feature. The report can group data by page, country, date, or device. Page data uses the final URL after redirects and generally assigns performance to the canonical URL rather than a duplicate URL.

Dates are reported in Pacific Time. That matters for teams comparing Search Console with analytics or commerce systems configured for another zone. A calendar day in Shanghai, London, or New York may not begin and end with the same set of events as a Pacific Time day. Convert boundaries deliberately before comparing daily series.

Property exposure and page exposure are different units

The page rows sum to five because the third event contains two pages. The property total is four because the site appeared in four events. The difference of one is additional page exposure within an event, not an extra user, click, query, or independent answer.

Call the first quantity property exposure and the second page exposure in an internal report, as long as the definitions are shown. Those labels are editorial conveniences rather than Google product names. They make it harder to add the two values or compare them as if they shared a denominator.

If the complete page sum were available, dividing it by the property total would describe the average number of counted page impressions per counted property impression under the selected scope. It would not tell you how many links every answer contained, because reporting limits and filters can make the page total incomplete.

The page table may be an incomplete inventory

Google notes that ordinary Search performance limitations apply, including a 1,000-row table limit. A sum of exported page rows may therefore omit lower-volume pages. Treat it as the sum of the rows returned, not automatically as the site’s complete page-exposure total.

This limitation becomes important for large catalogs and international sites. A property may have thousands of canonical pages with small counts. A top-rows export can show concentration among prominent pages while hiding a long tail. The hidden tail cannot be reconstructed by subtracting the visible page sum from a property total because the two aggregates have different counting rules.

Export behavior also needs a note. The documentation says values shown as unavailable symbols in the interface become zeros in downloaded data. An exported zero can therefore represent a display value that was unavailable, rather than a directly observed absence. Preserve the extraction method and avoid treating every zero as an event count known to be exactly zero.

The newest points can be preliminary and may change as collection completes. Freeze reporting after an agreed delay or mark preliminary periods clearly. Otherwise, a dashboard may report a “decline” that is simply an unfinished latest interval.

If eligibility itself is in question, inspect the documented Search generative AI control and its effective property scope. A report observation and a saved inclusion choice remain different records.

A measurement record that survives review

For every export, save the property, report name, retrieval timestamp, selected dates, feature scope, dimension, filters, and time zone. Record whether the newest points were preliminary and whether the table hit its row limit.

Keep raw chart data and raw table data as separate files. Do not overwrite them with a cleaned summary. A later analyst should be able to reproduce the calculation and see whether a canonical migration, filter, or scope change altered the series.

Use one row per metric definition in a data dictionary. That calculation says the measured property-level exposure rose. It does not say traffic rose by 20 percent or that a content edit caused the change.

Now suppose the visible page rows rise from 1,400 to 2,100 while the property total remains 1,200 in both periods. One possible explanation is that more pages appeared within some exposure events. Other possibilities include changed canonical assignment, changed row coverage, or altered filters. Inspect the exported rows and site changes before choosing an explanation.

Segment results without manufacturing a story

Country and device dimensions can reveal that an overall trend combines different movements. If fictional counts rise from 1,000 to 1,200 while one country’s count falls from 700 to 600, the property grew overall but declined in that country. Reporting only the total would conceal a market-specific issue.

Do not compare a country-filtered page sum with an unfiltered property chart. The arithmetic will run, but the populations differ. Apply the same scope first, then state whether the result is property-aggregated or page-aggregated.

Canonical URL assignment can also change apparent page winners. If several duplicate URLs consolidate to one canonical, the canonical row can rise without an equivalent change in total exposure. Google’s canonicalization guidance explains the broader purpose of canonical selection; the AI report documentation defines how this report assigns most page data.

Regional content teams should inspect language and market context outside the report where necessary. A country dimension identifies the search origin under Google’s definition; it does not establish the language of the question, the buyer’s nationality, or the commercial market eventually served.

What an impression cannot prove

An impression does not reveal whether a page supplied a decisive fact, appeared as a supporting link, or was recommended positively. It does not contain answer position, sentiment, or the user’s next action. Those questions require other observations.

The metric also does not disclose the query in this report. Avoid reverse-engineering a keyword story from a page title alone. A page can be relevant to several fan-out queries or appear for questions whose wording is not present in the title.

Clicks and business outcomes need their own data. Where privacy and system constraints permit, use analytics, inquiry records, assisted-conversion research, or reader studies. Missing referrer information should remain missing rather than being filled with a fabricated AI attribution.

Finally, a before-and-after impression rise is not a causal experiment. Demand, product news, competitors, platform behavior, index updates, and report changes can move at the same time. OpenAI’s evaluation guidance concerns model-system evaluation rather than Search Console, but its insistence on task-specific and repeatable measurement is a useful general discipline.

Build a dashboard that shows its limits

A defensible dashboard presents the official total first, then the segments and pages that explain composition. Keep a visible note for row limits, preliminary data, canonical assignment, feature scope, and time zone. Link every derived number to its formula.

Avoid a single composite “GEO score” that mixes Google impressions, sampled citations from other assistants, clicks, and sentiment. The units differ. Display them as a measurement chain: eligible content, observed exposure, answer behavior, visits, and business outcomes. A change at one stage does not imply a proportional change at the next.
